On October 24, 25, and 26, David Afkham makes his San Francisco Symphony debut with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Sergey Khachatryan. The second half of the program showcases Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8, a piece composed in troubled times, and sure to resonate with today’s audiences.

He then travels to Minnesota to lead the orchestra on October 30 and 31, where the audience will be treated to Boulanger’s Of a Sad Evening, followed by Saint-Saëns’ enchanting Piano Concerto No. 2 with pianist Janice Carissa. Weill’s Symphony No. 2 and Ravel’s La Valse will bring the evening to its dizzying end.
