Concert with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra available to watch online
Lili Boulanger, who died young, attracted attention with her precocious music. It is usually described as impressionistic, but the style of her last orchestral work, D’un soir triste, is closer to expressionism. It took Arnold Schönberg much longer to get used to composing for orchestra: the symphonic poem Pelléas et Mélisande was his first large-scale orchestral work, and at the time of its premiere, the composer was already over thirty. “At times, the violinist resembles a tightrope walker, moving quite unsteadily along the high rope separating the beginning and end of the piece,” Oliver Knussen described his violin concerto. In this concert, the RSO’s own concertmaster Petri Aarnio performed on the trapeze.
