On January 19 and 20, David Afkham joins the Staatsorchester Stuttgart for a lush and virtuosic program of Richard Wagner, Paul Hindemith, and Anton Bruckner. The concert opens with Wagner’s Siegfried-Idyll, a tender symphonic poem originally composed as an intimate birthday gift for his wife, Cosima. Afkham will also lead the orchestra in Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, a majestic and sweeping work, nicknamed the “Romantic” by the composer. Between these two great Romantic works will be Hindemith’s dynamic and richly-textured Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, featuring clarinetist Sharon Kam.
