David Afkham makes his debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid, conducting the opening night of Pierre Audi’s new production of Bomarzo.

David is no stranger to the Madrid public, as he is in his second season as Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Nacional de España, however, the score that he conducts will definitely be unfamiliar to most. Ginestera’s Bomarzo sets the libretto by Manuel Mujica Laínez and tells the story of the Pier Francesco Orsini, the 16th century  Duke of Bomarzo who drinks a magic potion that promises him immortality, but is instead poisoned. As the tonic takes effect, the Duke recalls his life in a series of flashbacks.

It has been over 40 years since Bomarzo was performed on a European stage, with the last performance being at the London Coliseum in 1976. The production is co-produced by the Teatro Real and the Dutch National Opera.

The opening night takes place 24 April, with further performances on 28 April and 2, 5 & 7 May at the Teatro Real Madrid.
