Mahler in Madrid
On April 4, 5, 6 and 11, 12, and 13, David Afkham returns to the Orquesta Nacional de España, where he is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, to conduct Mahler’s deeply personal and emotionally intense Symphony No. 6, often called Tragic Symphony. Many consider the work to be eerily prophetic; shortly after it was written, Mahler experienced the tragic death of his four-year-old daughter, his forced resignation from the Vienna Opera, and the diagnosis of his fatal heart condition.
Afkham has previously performed the piece with the Orquesta in 2019, after which Platea Magazine said, “David Afkham es lo mejor que le ha pasado a esta orquesta en la última década (David Afkham is the best thing to happen to the orchestra in the last decade).”
